The Chairman of Rural Resettlement Taskforce in the local government, Augustin Kampayana has commended Gisagara and Huye districts for embracing village settlement programs.
Kampayana said this basing on the fact that the two districts have already shifted all residents to village settlement after grass thatched housing (Nyakatsi) was abolished.
“The district administrators did not let residents settle wherever they want” he explained.
The chairman of rural resettlement taskforce urges other districts to imitate these districts and settle residents in the village settlement.
Kampayana asserts that the advantage of village settlement is that residents access infrastructures such as roads, hospitals, electricity and develop.
Although Gisagara and Huye districts are thanked for resettling the former Nyakatsi houses residents, some residents are living in areas that might expose them to natural disasters like soil erosion on hilly areas and flooding in swampy areas.
According to the boss in charge of rural resettlement taskforce in Southern Province, there are 475 homes in Gisagara and 47 households in Huye left to be settled in the village settlement.
