Posted on 09 March 2013

Local defense in Rusagara cell, Gakenke sector on March 5th 2013 closed restaurants and bars in Gakenke district that acted as prostitutes’ dens in addition to poor sanitation.

The main reasons for closure that authorities wrote on the doors of these restaurants and bars are lack of cleanness and insecurity issues.

Patrick Murekezi, head of Local Defense in Gakenke district who led the operation asserts: “In addition to poor hygiene, there is insecurity caused by prostitutes and street children that come to these places.”

Some of the bars that serve food to the customers were found with dirty kitchens as seen in the below pictures.

Melanie Mukanyandwi, one of the restaurant owners said the authorities took them by surprise and it will push them to great losses especially beverages and edible things they had stocked.

However, she admits prostitutes visit her bar-restaurant often and bring chaos.

The general security meeting that was held during the end of February 2013 asked the executive secretary of Gakenke sector to embark on supervising restaurants and bars that are dirty and harbor prostitutes in Gakenke town.
