Nyabihu: Healthy benefits of spinach

Vegetables contain essential vitamins for the body development

Spinach is an edible flowering plant in the family of Amaranthaceae. It is native to central and southwestern Asia. It is an annual plant, which grows to a height of up to 30 centimeters.

Spinach is very important to human health and it can be eaten raw or cooked.

Spinach is accessible in all markets of Rwanda and at fair prices. Spinach is made up of 90 percent water.

Experts say that spinach has a high nutritional value and is extremely rich in antioxidants, especially when fresh, steamed, or quickly boiled.

It is a rich source of sugar, lipids, fiber, sodium, magnesium, calcium, iron, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B9, Vitamin E, Vitamin B2, and Vitamin B6 among others.

Spinach and fruits protect the body against diabetes, cancer, Asthma, lowers blood pressure and promotes healthy hair and skin.

“Eating spinach is very crucial because it has iron and many other vitamins that build the body,” said Aphrodice Mugemangango, Doctor at Ihumure Dispensaire in Nyabihu district.
