Nyabihu residents have contributed over Rwf21 million to improve livelihoods of vulnerable survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.
The residents raised the amount through different individual contributions, during the commemoration week which started on 07th, April, 2014.
“The donation will help to improve the lives of vulnerable genocide survivors,” says Juru Anastase; IBUKA representative in Nyabihu district.
40 per cent of the money is being used to renovate Mukamira genocide memorial site while 60 per cent was used to purchase livestock for survivors and repairing their houses.
“The money is very helpful to the vulnerable genocide survivors. While remembering, we should strive to help the vulnerable become self reliant,” denotes Alexandre Ingabire, a resident.
“Residents showed commitment and reconciliation when they donated that entire sum,” says Alexandre Sahunkuye; vice-mayor for social affairs in Nyabihu district.
