Selling scrap metal

Collected scrap metal

While some children wonder everywhere looking for scrap metal to sell, parents are complaining that children are adopting bad behaviors like stealing.

Selling scrap metal is a hot business all over the country where young and old search every place for old metals to sell to business people or directly to recycling factories.

Residents complain that children sometimes take useful things from homes like charcoal stoves to sell them as scrap.

An example are two children in Musambira sector in Kamonyi district were caught after stealing iron sheets and hoes to sell them, they claimed to have found them in the garbage.

Theft of this kind was confirmed by one woman in Runda sector who lost her saucepan following other metallic utensils to her scrap metal seller son.

While scrap is sold at Rwf100 a kilo in Kigali, one of the children we talked to said he gets like 20 kilograms of metal amounting to Rwf2000 a day.

Residents of Bugesera District have been pursued to dedicate their valuable time in helping disabled children among others according to the District MayorLouis Rwagaju, during recent celebrations of African child.

Mayor urges residents to pay

Louis Rwagaju asked those who had attended these celebrations to respect and protect all children’s rights and especially the handicapped whether in education, entertainment and in anything else they would like to do as the government usually calls them to do.

“This is the reason that the government puts in place infrastructure that favours handicapped people whether in school they are given chairs that support them and their special toilets and the law that states every storied building should have a way for the disabled people.” He explained.

This function was opened with sports of the disabled children, plays, poetry and dances that all tackle the theme of the day which stated “Children with disabilities, the duty to protect, respect, promote and fulfil”

Vestine Ntirenganya one of the children with disabilities from Ririma sector in Bugesera district said that though the leaders usually teach and advise people about children rights there is a long way to go.

She said “some parents don’t yet understand children’s rights especially the handicapped ones and that’s why leaders should always remind people and parents take a responsibility to attend those teachings.”

Children who presented dances, poems and plays that were talking about the theme of the day were awarded and all children who attended these celebrations were given some of the scholastic materials.

Rwanda : Childrens centre

Rwanda | Children’s centre for those born in prison

Partners and administration of Muhanga prison have said that children born in prison or those coming with their mothers while young should not face the consequencies of their parents.

Rwanda : Childrens centre

This was confirmed on February 28th 2012 during an event to officially open a children care centre “Centre Psycho-social AMAHORO” for children that are born in Muhanga prison.

The care centre will teach children, care for them and provide advice for inmates and prison workers on mental health.

Rwanda : Childrens centre

Eugeni Musayidire, founder of this centre reveals to have got the idea after visiting this prison and saw children below three years of age staying with their mothers in the prison.

Children being in prison looked like they are prisoners because they suffered the consequencies.

“These children did not know life outside the prison. They cannot differentiate a dog from a cow. They have been on their mothers backs and fear the sand we have prepared for them to play in,” adds Musayidire

One inmate with a two years old child says this care centre will help them grow well because they have been living a life of prisoners.

“Our children could stay on our backs without space to play from but now they have got a place to play from. Although they will not meet their relatives, the care centre will teach them human behavior,” adds the prisoner mother.

One of the Acting Commissioners of prisons in Rwanda, Emmanuel Rukundo asserts that the children’s centre is a solution to the inmate mothers who have been going through the struggle to take care of themselves and also the children with less or no capacity to up bring children.

Head of Muhanga prison Gerald Ntarugera confirms that prisons are faced with problems of raising children of prisoners without the governments help.

He adds that raising inmates’ children should be a responsibility of Ministry of gender and family promotion (MIJEPROF).

Centre Psycho-social AMAHORO, was built by Eugenie Musayidire funded by Green Helmets project.

Village chairperson a dressing parents

Local authorities in Nyamagabe district have declared to be punishing any parent with a child below the age of 18 years who is not in school as ruled out recently at Kabajogo village, Gasaka sector.

Village leaders took the decision as a way of stopping the bad practice of using children for domestic work (child forced labor) instead of sending them to school.

Kabajogo village chairperson Sekimonyo Jean Marie Vianey said “any parent with a child who is not his or her and is not able to send him or her to school, that person must take responsibility for the child to reach his or her immediate home or else send him or her to school”.

He described that “every child should enjoy the right to education though it has been realized that most children are being stopped to attend schools by their care takers and this has to be dealt with so that everyone respects rights of children instead of taking their childhood for granted”.
