Nyamasheke Youth renovates house for a sick old lady

Kamagaju had a 2 bed rooms and a sitting room house of which one of the bedrooms fell apart, the youth renovated this house and cleared this bedroom which had fell. Helping people through community work is one of the things that NYFC teaches the youth in its lessons of patriotism and playing a role to rebuild the country as Janvier Ndanga the coordinator of NYFC explained.

He went on to say that youth decided to always do the community work alone and help one of the poor people in labour work every month though they wish to do it twice a month so that theycan do something tangible in rebuilding the country and the management of NYFC is looking for a way to make their wish implemented.

Because of lack of enough funds, this youth started with their immediate neighbours and those in far sectors will be attended when they get a way to do so. Ndanga told the youth that they should see where the government is going to and then play a role towards making it better since they are many and are capable of working.

He also asked parents to let their children to come to the center after doing their allocated chores to get some teachings about their health and to be taught how to work.

After the community work, the youth were taught about how they can protect themselves from Sexual Transmitted Diseases and AIDS, to prevent unwanted pregnancies, drugs and others that would be dangerous to their health.

Rwanda : Timely counsel can prevent suicide – Police

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

Rwanda as a developing country has lately not been affected by big numbers of suicide according to available police statistics. However, from time to time, cases of suicide have been reported around the country which police thinks can be averted if timely advise is sought and provided.

Suicide is the act of intentionally causing one’s own death. It is often committed because of many factors such as despair which may be caused by depression, alcoholism and drug abuse.

It could also be caused by poverty or financial difficulties, poor interpersonal relationships, loneliness, unemployment and poor mental health.

Global statistics show that, over one million people die by suicide every. It is the 13th leading cause of death.

While there might be different causes of suicide in developed and developing countries, the statistics apply to both.

Consequences brought about by suicide are far reaching. It affects families of the deceased in who remain in poverty, causes prostitution, school dropouts, drug abuse and delinquency.

Despite the few cases in Rwanda, they occur sporadically. For instance last week on Thursday in Huye district, Mbazi sector, Mwurire cell, Ananias Makuza, 61, committed suicide by drinking rat poison.

He died at a health center where he was being treated .The cause was reported as the shame caused by his mother in law who found him committing adultery in the trench on the road side.

In Musanze district, Gataraga sector, Rungu cell, Callixte Habamenshi, 49, also committed suicide by drinking poison. He died upon his arrival at Ruhengeri hospital. Investigationsto this cause are still on.

According to police, local leaders have a mandate to identify and follow up on people with problems that may lead to suicide and advise them in time before they take their lives.

It also calls on troubled people to seek advice by approaching authorities or reporting to the nearest Police station instead of using their own ways of solving problems by causing more complexities.

MPs want orphanages phased out

Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Rose Mukantabana

The issue of orphanages has yet again come up after discovering that children in orphanages undergo difficult lives.

The problem was once again highlighted this week during a brainstorming session by Chamber of Deputies.

The standing committee on social affairs had earlier this year presented to the House its findings on a previous study that highlighted the problems affecting orphanages and homes of citizens with special needs countrywide.

The MPs want these children to be adopted by families so that they can get the chance to grow in a family environment and orphanages phased out.

Speaker Rose Mukantabana expressed confusion over why children or the elderly should be left to care about themselves independently.

“The problem of these children was linked with that of the elderly. Why are the country’s children taking care of themselves while we are here? What about those with parents yet they are out on the streets? And, what about these parents who continue to produce children that they cannot ably care for?” the Speaker posed, as she addressed the Assembly.

“The problems include orphanages which take in a higher number of children than they can support. Children in these orphanages have poor standards of living, unqualified staff in orphanages, and orphanages that accept children who actually have parents,” said MP Esperance Mwiza, the Chairperson of the committee.

Zaina Nyiramatama, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Children (NCC), noted that their research indicates that there are 33 recognised orphanages in the country with 3, 153 orphans, 55 percent boys. Nine of the orphanages are in Kigali.

According to reasons for the mounting numbers of homeless children, include the deaths of both parents, death of a mothers, poverty and mental disorders.

She stressed that orphanages are not the ideal place to bring up children as they are deprived of a normal upbringing due to issues that include lack of proper parental care, poor feeding, and normal family love and happiness.

Rwanda | Government consolidates disaster management measures as heavy rains continue to cause havoc in some parts of the country

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Following unrelentingly heavy rains which have over the last one month flooded parts of the country, mainly the Northern, Western and Eastern Province, Government has stepped up disaster management mechanisms to contain the effects.

It has been realized that the National Disaster Steering Committee – NDSC, an organ responsible for policy and coordination of disaster management at the highest level made up of heads of eight institutions needed support to render it more responsive and effective. This is why under it another team at technical level named Disaster Steering Technical Committee was created on May 1, 2012 and launched May 11.

Institutions that make up the NDSC are Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugees Affairs – MIDIMAR (chair), Ministry of Defense (vice chair), Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Internal Security, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Infrastructure, Rwanda Defense Forces and Rwanda National Police.

The launch exercise took place at an extra ordinary meeting held at the Office of the Prime Minister, chaired by General Marcel Gatsinzi, (MIDIMAR). Participants sought to wrestle down challenges experienced while trying to respond rapidly to natural calamity, in this case recent severe rains.

The meeting was also attended by Protais Musoni, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Stanislas Kamanzi, Minister of Natural Resources and Alvera Mukabaramba, Minister of State in charge of Community Development and Social Affairs plus several other senior government officials from NDSC, members of the technical committee. The committee was immediately tasked with drawing an action plan soonest to address issues of better disaster preparedness and quicker response mechanisms by government.

In less than two months, unpredictably heavy rains have claimed 17 people. Fatal landslides, damaged roads and washed away swathes of crop fields are the other disaster effects. Districts hit hardest are Musanze, Nyabihu, Rubavu, Rulindo, Ngororero, Muhanga, Nyamagabe and Karongi. Nyagatare, Bugesera and Kayonza have also not been spared.

Minister Gatinzi said Government is doing its level best to contain the disasters as well as mitigate their effects through various rescue actions.

“Government is doing everything possible to provide shelter, Medicare, psychological counseling, food and other essential commodities to the unfortunate families. Government wishes to assure Rwandans that while some of these disasters are beyond prevention, every resource shall be mobilized and deployed to minimize the damage they end up causing.”

The minister also called up on families to take good care of the young ones since they naturally most vulnerable. He appealed to people in the zones often affected to report early any signs of possible disasters, reminded local administrations about their primary role of ensuring citizens protection and urged them to always link up quickly with higher authorities for timely reinforcement.

In the medium and long term, government has plans of relocating all people settled in zones prone to disasters to safer areas.

Ministry of Health provides

Rwanda s health ministry this Thursday distributed 7 brand new ambulances to different hospitals

The seven ambulances handed over to the hospitals are in line with the government program of equipping Health centers and hospitals in the country with ambulances.

Dr. Agnes Binagwaho, Rwanda’s Minister of Health expressed her delight that the ministry is achieving its goals of extending ambulances in each district to help sick people easily access health services.

She urged hospital Directors to develop a business plan that will help maintain the ambulances without depending on the government.

“More ambulances have been given out to increase access to health care services. This is in a bid to increase rapid intervention in cases of emergency such as accidents, mothers going to deliver and many other health-related crises that may befall Rwandans”, Binagwaho said.

Among the hospitals which received ambulances include; Masaka in Kicukiro district, Mubilizi in Rusizi district, Remera Rukoma in Kamonyi district, Shyira in Nyabihu district and Mugonero in Karongi district.

Apart from taking patients to hospitals, the ambulances also contain first aid materials, sickbed and a place for a physician when giving basic treatment to a patient.

Under this program, the Health Ministry has so far offered 208 ambulances all over the country.
