Commemorating has a positive impact on Rwandan communities says residents of Nyabihu district as Rwanda commemorates for the 19^th time the victims of the 1994 genocide against Tutsis.

Jean Bosco Ndagijimana One of the residents in Mukamira sector says commemoration period reminds him of the atrocities done during the genocide and how hard it was for a person to survive and trauma genocide survivors experienced. This increases his love and respect for genocide survivors and he does all he can to support and improve their social welfare.

Jean Bosco Ndagijimana is a Hutu who did all he could to save Tutsis during the 1994 genocide by taking the risk to hide them as some genocide survivors confirm.

For Jerome Zirimwabagabo a resident of Nyabihu district says “commemorating genocide reminds of the big number of Tutsis who were killed just because of the way they born. This makes do all I can to make sure genocide like what happened in Rwanda does not happen again anywhere in the world.”

Commemoration of genocide gives a chance to those who were little or who were not born and those who were not in the country to learn about genocide and its effects to Rwanda.

Jerome Zirimwabagabo says that during commemoration period, he gets the desire to tell the youth about the genocide that annihilated most of the Rwandan population. The youth need to know how the genocide was prepared, how it was carried out and its effects to Rwanda.

Jerome says that people who were present and affected by the genocide, youth who were born during and after the genocide need to know the dangers and post effects of the genocide to Rwandans in order to make the long lasting strategies to prevent genocide forever.

“Commemoration makes people to relive their past and to learn from the history of Rwanda and to prepare for the future striving to regain hope together” says Jacqueline Mukantaganda a resident of Rugeshi cell.

“Commemorating makes the past unforgettable for what is forgotten can happen again” explained Francine Mukandori a resident of Rugeshi cell.

She went on to say, “It would be in vain if we can learn the history of other countries and forget about our country. It is good to remember and re-commemorate and people to always be aware of our past and to rebuild our Rwanda on unity and reconciliation as well as attain lasting development.”

Umuyobozi wa Ibuka mu karere ka Nyamagabe, Ndayisaba Elie yashimiye abantu batandukanye baje kwifatanya n’abacitse ku icumu mu gutangiza igihe cyagenewe kwibuka jenoside yakorewe abatutsi, ndetse n’inzego z’umutekano zikomeje kubungabunga umutekano w’abacitse ku icumu.

Ndayisaba yakomeje avuga ko kuba bemera ko jenoside yakozwe kandi ko ari amateka y’abanyarwanda b’ubu n’abazaza ari imwe mu ntwaro zifashishwa mu guhangana n’abayipfobya, barwanya kwibuka ndetse no gufata neza inzibutso.

Umuyobozi w’akarere ka Nyamagabe, Mugisha Philbert yashimiye abacitse ku icumu ko bakomeye ndetse bakaba bafite icyizere cyo kubaho kandi neza.

Yatangaje ko ubuyobozi buzi neza ko hari ibibazo abacitse ku icumu bagihura nabyo n’ubwo hari intambwe nini bateye, bukaba bufite gahunda zo kubikemura ku bufatanye n’abafatanyabikorwa.

The 1994 genocide against Tutsis vulnerable survivors in Bugesera district decry lack of accommodation and they want the district administration to step in and help them get accommodation before the problem gets worse.

This was discussed during the general assembly of Ibuka in Bugesera district that convened in Nyamata sector on the 3^rd.Jan.2013 when the coordinators of Ibuka in all sectors of Bugesera district presented the big problems affecting genocide survivors who are poor.

One of the big problems that are affecting the genocide survivors is lack of accommodation where some have none, others are in semi built houses and others got destroyed as John Rwikangura the coordinator of Ibuka in Bugesera district explained.

“in 2012, about 96 houses were built which were worth Rwf300 million and in 2013, about 70 houses will be built which will be worth Rwf270million and 54 houses will be remaining to be built plus 476 houses that need to renovated for the problem of accommodation among the needy genocide survivors to be completely solved.

As well as Ibuka, the Bugesera district administration is also concerned by this problem of lack of accommodation for the needy genocide survivors. The district has a plan of building accommodations for these genocide survivors through the district’s economic budget for the economic year 2012/2013 and this is already under the process though local people will participate through community work as Louis Rwagaju the mayor explained.

“In this year 2013, people with no accommodation will get where to stay in the 70 houses under construction, this will move along renovation of the destroyed houses and this is going to be done sooner” the mayor explained.

In this meeting, the problem of genocide survivors who were put in the class of people who are capable of supporting themselves according to Ubudehe social stratification was also discussed. These people were initially supported in FARG in paying for medical insurance need this issue to be reviewed as it is becoming difficult for them to pay for medical insurances.

The mayor advised people with this problem to talk to the committees of justice in the sectors to address their problems.

The orphans of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi are supposed to develop themselves and fill the gap left by their parents, according to Gonzaga Bizimana, the president of the advisory council for Kamonyi district.

Bizimana was addressing 15 orphans of genocide who are taken care of by different families in Kayumbu sector during the council’s visit in the area.

Visiting these orphans is a yearly act to the district advisory council and which is about to show these orphans that they are not alone and that they will support them through. The council contributed and bought a cow to these children to support the president of the republic in Girinka program.

These 15 children that were visited are raised in 12 families and they were happy saying that it always feels great to be remembered and cared for by their leaders and that it gives them hope.

Pierre Celestin Nsengiyumva the executive secretary of Kayumbu sector thanked this council for giving a cow to one of these orphans as in they intended to give cows to the 6 families by the end of the year in their performing contracts.

The cow was given to Grace Uwamahoro and the remaining 5 children will be given cows by the sector. These children said that they need people to guide them so as to have a better future.

A group of 58 genocide widows in Rutunga sector, Gasabo District on Tuesday received33 high breed goats courtesy of the Rwanda National Police Hospital.

The widows were also given several agricultural equipments such as watering cans and pesticide containers which they will use to increase agricultural productivity.

All donated items were valued at Rwf 1,130,000 from the contributions from Kacyiru Police Hospital staff members.

Speaking at the event, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Daniel Nyamwasa, the Commandant of Kacyiru Police Hospital said that the donation is part of several other welfare activities Police engages in as an effort to promote improved living conditions of vulnerable Rwandans.

He urged the widows to take good care of donated goats. “These goats are going to reproduce and have an impact in your lives if you take good care of them.

Kacyiru Police Hospital also promised to address psychological problems that were inflicted to some of the survivors of the 1994 Tutsi Genocide.

James Nzirimu, the official in charge of advocacy at the National Commission against Genocide (CNLG) lauded theHospital’s contribution towards the welfare of the widows.

Nzirimu urged them to play their role by breeding the goats in a good way so they can have high production which he said would help to solve a number of basic needs.

Expressing her happiness, Sarafina Uwimana commended Police Hospital for supporting them.

On July 26^th 2012, Youth motorcyclists in COTMNDAGA cooperative in Kiziguro sector donated goats worth Rwf150, 000 to vulnerable genocide survivors.

COTMNDAGA cooperative members give livestock among themselves but they donated goats to vulnerable residents as a way of joining their neighbours in fighting poverty.

Frank Nkundineza revealed to the beneficiaries, Kiziguro and Gatsibo district authorities that they desire to build their country starting from their residence areas.

Nkundineza adds donating to the vulnerable residents is an act of love they intend to instill in their neighbours to help and resolve problems in society.

Angelique Uwimana, a beneficiary from Mushobora Cell in Remera sector, thanked youth motorcyclists for the love and promised to make good use of the goat to achieve development.

COTMNDAGA cooperative members were asked to strive for social and economic development fighting drug use that is common in motorcyclists.

COTMNDAGA motorcyclists were given uniforms and visited Kiziguro genocide memorial centre where over 12000 bodies are laid to rest.
