The 1994 genocide survivors in Gicumbi district still have a problem of accommodation and about 170 houses need reconstruction. This was said by Alexander Mvuyekure The mayor of Gicumbi district on Monday the 15^th.April.2013.

“We are working on strategies to provide solutions to the accommodations problems of genocide survivors that include renovating about 170 houses and constructing 22 new houses” said the mayor.

These houses will be renovated on the support of the alms collected from Gicumbi district residents in supporting the genocide survivors trying to curb down the effects of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis.

Gicumbi district has already collected more than Rwf20 million in the one week of the commemoration period.

He asked people to fight genocide ideologies and make sure genocide does not happen again ever.  He also presented the problems affecting genocide survivors in Ruvune sector especially not getting their properties compensated, unfinished cases and lack of clerks to make their compensation payment possible.

The coordinator of IBUKA in Gicumbi district says commemoration is so important to all Rwandans especially genocide survivors who get hope to move on with life and a better future.

Izo nzererezi nazo zemera ko ziba zakoze ibikorwa bihungabanya umutekano nyuma yo kuzava aho babagororera bakazasubira mubuzima busanzwe batangaza ko bazakomeza kwitwara neza.

Quelques habitants sous alimentés du district de Gicumbi ont indiqué qu’une bonne alimentation ne demande pas beaucoup d’argent.

Les enfants recevant des aliments équilibrés

Les différents autorités ont ainsi sensibilisés les habitants de prendre des aliments équilibrés afin d’éviter une sous alimentation. Ces autorités n’ont pas seulement planté des légumes dans les jardins potagers mais ils ont distribué des aliments variés et équilibrés aux enfants présentant des symptômes de malnutrition. Un des agents de santé présent à cette cérémonie a déclaré que ces aliments sont nutritifs, préventifs contre certaines maladies liées à la mauvaise alimentation.

Une des mères présentes, Nirere Daphrose a affirmé : «  Je viens d’apprendre que la préparation des aliments équilibrés ne demande pas beaucoup de choses. Normalement nous disposons de ces aliments mais nous ne savions pas les donner à nos enfants »

« Je demande que nous soyons ensemble pour lutter et éradiquer la sous alimentation dans nos ménages ! » a-t-elle ajoutée.

While the government of Rwanda implemented nyakatsi eradication program, some residents in Gicumbi district are living in unroofed houses due to laziness and irresponsibility.

During the recent security meeting this year 2012, Emile Nyakagabo in charge of fighting nyakatsi in Gicumbi district revealed that nyakatsi houses are seen in this place and those who were in grass thatched houses still live in houses with no doors and roofs.

As a way of sharing ideas on the problem of people that previously occupied nyakatsi houses, Emile Nyakagabo showed the list of all sectors that have not completed building for the former nyakatsi residents.

However, sector leaders in this place admit to the problem but partly blame the residents for not participating through community work so that houses are completed.

“Residents in Group B are energetic but refused to turn up for the community work”. For the work to be done, residents have to join efforts with the government.

Still, some people find shelter in other people’s homes when they can play their part to get their own houses, leaders explain.

Others deliberately refuse to do anything waiting for the government to do everything for them, adds sector leaders.

Sector leaders confessed about some of their residents that have entered unfinished houses or partly roofed their houses with grass due to poverty.

Theoneste Ngezahumuremyi, Byumba sector leader confirmed that this resident named Gakuru who has a wife and four children used grass to thatch one side of the house due to poverty.

The decision was reached by Byumba sector administration to provide iron sheets to complete Gakuru’s house.

Although this problem is still there, Vice mayor for finance Alexandre Mvuyekure blamed local leadership for contributing to this problem through delaying to give out iron sheets to the residents.
