Residents of Kabarore sector in Gatsibo district have started cutting down banana tubes and other crops grown along the roadside after being told that the sector intends to develop in to a modern town.
Other than removing the crops, residents were also urged to relocate their farming activities and start to prepare their plots for modern building. The district official in charge of finance said that developing a town can’t go hand in hand with farming activities. He was speaking at a meeting with locals to explain to them the district plans. Residents on the other hand complained saying that it was unfair for officials to ask them to relocate their farming activities when construction is ready to take off. District officials say that the town should be clean ahead of time so that people with financial means can start buying plots and build according to the district master plan.
According to the master plan, people who built in places not in line with the district master plan will be relocated while those whose houses will be destroyed by infrastructures will be compensated.
