One of the cows
In abid to uplift Rwandese out of poverty and to improve on nutrition, FARG on May 17th 2012 gave 9 cows to the vulnerable genocide survivors from Mukamira and Kintobo sectors
According to Francois Rwamucyo, in charge of social affairs; six cows were given to Mukamira sector while three cows were given to Kintobo.
Beneficiaries were asked to take good care of the cows by keeping them in kraals, feeding them and contacting veterinarians in case they are sick, Rwamucyo says.
Rwamucyo reminded the beneficiaries that they should make cows yield because they have to give cows to their fellow vulnerable genocide survivors.
FARG is a Rwandan government program that supports vulnerable widows and orphans of 1994 Tutsi genocide

Cell leaders of Rusizi district gathered at the district headquarters to sign contracts against poor feeding with the district Mayor, according to the meeting of 19th March2012.
The signed terms state that by June 2012 no sign of malnutrition should still be available in any part of Rusizi district.
Rusizi district Mayor Oscar Nzeyimana said that “Rusizi district has 1.81% malnourished children. To solve this, all cell leaders should sensitize citizens about good nutrition, proper farming and rearing of animals.”
“There is a great need to achieve the set targets; therefore all stakeholders should get involved in improving nutrition standards of Rwanda’s children.” Add the district mayor
Emmanuel Ndamuzeye a district worker in charge of health, the signed contracts are meant to devise means of eliminating malnutrition once and for all.
Leatitia Uwamariya -leader of Rebero cell in Nzahaha Sector says that in order to fight against malnutrition they have weekly nutrition studies which she says are to be offered 2 times a week.
Following nationwide statistics, Kicukiro district was said to be the district with least number of malnourished children with a 0.66percent however Rubavu district came up with the worst statistics as the district with most malnourished children at about 3percent.

Dans son programme de dénouer le problème lié a la sous alimentation, le district de Rusizi a mis sur pied un programme de traite des vaches pour les enfants. Ainsi les ménages possédant des vaches pourront donner du lait aux enfants des familles qui n’en disposent pas.

La vice maire du district chargée des affaires sociales, Nirere Francoise, déclare que ce programme a le but de résoudre les problèmes de la sous alimentation qui engendrent des maladies.
Madame Nirere ajoute : « Dans chaque cellule, ce programme est envisagé chaque semaine où les familles ayant des vaches pourront offrir du lait aux enfants des ménages qui ne possèdent pas des vaches. Et ceci dans le but de mettre fin aux maladies liées à la sous alimentation ».
Au cours de la réunion qui s’est tenue ce 27 février 2012 réunissant les différents responsables des centres de santé et de nutrition, les autorités chargées des affaires sociales dans les secteurs, les délégués des animateurs de santé dans les centres de santé et le responsable de la nutrition dans l’hôpital du district de Rusizi, une décision unanime a été prise pour que les efforts soient consentis pour résoudre ce problème. Ainsi des écoles de nutrition seront instaurées dans chaque cellule pour aider les parents d’enfants à préparer des aliments équilibrés.
Niyigarura Pelouse, une conseillère dans le secteur de Bweyeye affirme que des cas de sous alimentation subsistent encore dans cette région. « Si nous comparons les données que nous avons, sur 2481 enfants que nous avons examiné au début de cette année, 56 enfants présentent des symptômes de sous alimentation » a-t-elle ajoutée.
Les causes de ce problème sont l’extrême pauvreté des parents et d’autres qui n’ont pas ces notions de préparation des aliments équilibrées et riches en calories.

Most Rwandans take papaya fruits for digestion purposes, but the humble fruit is gaining credibility in Western medicine for anticancer powers that folk cultures have recognized for generations.

Dr Nam Dang and other researchers from the University of Florida have documented papaya’s dramatic anticancer effect against a broad range of lab-grown tumors, including cancers of the cervix, breast, liver, lung and pancreas. The researchers used an extract made from dried papaya leaves, and the anticancer effects were stronger when cells received larger doses of the tea.
Dang and his colleagues also documented that papaya leaf extract boosts the production of key signaling molecules called Th1-type cytokines. This regulation of the immune system, in addition to papaya’s direct antitumor effect on various cancers, suggests possible therapeutic strategies that use the immune system to fight cancers.
Kigali University Central Hospital nutritionist Uwiragiye Joseph demonstrated that papaya fruit posses a lot of calcium for strong bones, it contributes to healthy skin pores and supports in blood circulation.
Papaya is therefore one of the most recommended fruits for a sound health and must be eaten fresh at least after meals.

Health advisors in Ngororero district have been urged to actively participate in cooperatives and take the lead in fighting malnutrition among children.

Speaking at a workshop for health advisors from Ngororero district, the Vice mayor in charge of social welfare Nyiraneza Clothilde reminded them their role in promoting cooperatives and protect their interests as they are part and parcel of the society. The vice mayor also asked them to practice what they preach and said: “You must teach but also put into practice your advices particularly with regard to the fight against malnutrition”
One health advisor Mudahunga J. Baptiste who took part in the workshop commended the lessons he learnt urging men to participate in domestic activities, which are usually referred to as feminine chores such as cooking, washing clothes, bathing children and home cleaning.
Nyirasinamenye Jeanne in charge of balanced diet at muhororo hospital criticized men who refuse to take part in such trainings yet they are vital for family progress.
Since august 2011 in Ngororero district statistics revealed that 975 children had malnutrition related problems, but today with ongoing training and awareness campaigns, the number has reduced to 653 children.
