About 24 families in Gahara sector in Kirehe District have been given iron sheets for roofing after their houses were recently destroyed by heavy rainfall with storms, leading to a disastrous situation. Red cross Rwanda donated this on 24th.March.2013.
The heavy rainfall that fell on the 11th of February 20134 destroyed about 87 houses including 2 cells offices, village offices and schools in Gahara district. The ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (MIDIMAR) interfered on the 14th.Feb.2013 and gave necessary materials to the displaced.
The Kirehe district administration with the support of Red Cross then decided to step in and give iron sheets to 24 families as well as help residents in the community work to build for those whose houses were destroyed by the rain.
Hirariya Nyirahabimana a recipient of iron sheets just like most others says she is grateful for being able to rebuild her house that was destroyed in the rain.
For Fustine Kayiranga who had tried everything to rebuild his house but failed due to financial constraints is grateful for the offer of the iron sheets and is hopeful at the prospects of having a home again.
The mayor of Kirehe district Protais Murayire reminded the displaced people who were given iron sheets to always make strong the roofs and to tie them tightly not to be taken away by strong winds.
The 24 families were given about 304 iron sheets out of 999 needed iron sheets to give all the displaced people homes. Red Cross and Kirehe district say the remaining will also be provided in time for all people to have roofs over their homes.
