The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) has compensated residents who were victims of animal attack in Gatsibo district, in the eastern province.

The residents suffered massive losses between the month of April and June, 2011, when animals trampled over their crops destroying the plantations in Rwimbogo sector, along the Akagera National Park

RDB offered the residents with a compensation of over Rwf18millions meant for 110 families, whose crops were destroyed by wild animals.

The compensated residents said that the move was a good sign that the Government is supportive and willing to resolve the problems of its citizens in such cases.

Tony Nsanganira, the Deputy Director General at Rwanda Development Board (RDB) said over Rwf2 billion was reserved to compensate those who lost their properties due to damages caused by wild animals and that the government has adopted a policy that aiming to settle wrangles between residents and wild animals in Akagera National Park.

Over Rwf450 Million has been set aside for this purpose of compensating residents nearing Akagera National Park in Eastern Province. Since 2005, about 306 claims from damages caused by animals’ country wide were recorded and most of the problems were caused by those of Akagera National Park.

An electric wall between the park and residential areas is currently under construction to prevent wild animals from crossing over and destroy people’s crops and sometimes taking lives of unfortunate ones.

In the training that was organized by RALGA, to boost the work of the Executives in sectors, it was shown that some of them do little in visiting the people they lead.

Dr. Eliab Muhawenimana said that” there are times people have problems and need to talk to their leaders but these people sometimes never give them a chance at all”.

Some of the greatest problems that people face is the poverty that may even cause them not follow the government programmes organized for them.

One of the residents of the area said that “sometimes they really need their leaders so that they can tell them their problems even when they are in their homes”

The executives said that “it is hard sometimes for them to get to every person because of the less time they have and the amount of work they have to carry out, so going to every person’s home becomes really hard for them”.

They added on that “the only time they get to sit with the villagers is when they are in meetings and this is the time they get to listen to their problems”.

The executive secretaries were called upon to put their strength in getting close to the people since they are the ones the lead, and this still will help them do their work very well.
