Wind displaces 52 families in Rubavu

Fifty-two families in Bugeshi sector, Rubavu district Western Rwanda were displaced by strong winds this week. Some of the houses lost rooftops while others were completely destroyed.

“Replacing the houses will be hard, especially getting iron sheets,” says Christine Bavugayabo one of the victims.

Rwanda Red Cross and Bugeshi sector authorities are improvising ways to resettle the displaced people, residential community work will facilitate the construction of temporary houses as the sector seeks a long term solution.

Bugeshi sector suffers storng winds owing to its hilly nature. Bugeshi is situated next to the  Kalisimbi and Mikeno Mountains and it is opposite Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira Volcanic mountains in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Rwandan government seeks to re-settle residents from high risk zones; these include steep hills, swamps and valleys.
